Intended Use

The AFP Fast Test Kit (Immunofluorescence Assay) is intended for in vitro quantitative determination of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in human serum or plasma samples.

About AFP

Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein encoded by the AFP gene in humans, with a molecular weight of approximately 70 kDa. AFP is produced in the fetal liver and yolk sac during fetal development. AFP levels are high at birth but decrease to very low levels by the age of one year. Healthy adults typically have very low levels of AFP.

AFP is produced by the fetal liver and passes into the amniotic fluid via fetal urine, with small amounts crossing into the maternal circulation. Elevated AFP levels in maternal serum and amniotic fluid are indicative of fetal demise or abnormalities such as neural tube defects.

In clinical practice, elevated AFP levels are observed in approximately 70% of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and in 50-70% of patients with nonseminomatous testicular tumors. AFP is widely recognized as a liver cancer marker, as elevated levels can indicate the presence of liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). High levels of AFP may also indicate cancers of the ovaries or testicles, as well as noncancerous liver conditions such as cirrhosis and hepatitis.
